I Create the Future

Aerion Technologies was contracted by La Trobe University to develop the I Create the Future Web Appliaction. This Web Appliaction is an online mentoring application for secondary school students to have the opportunity to learn more about women in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry. In a secure online environment, students can get to know female professionals in the ICT industry, providing them with an insight into different careers paths and opportunities within ICT. The Web Appliaction developed by Aerion Technologies was implemented using PHP and JavaScript with a MySQL database.

How the I create the Future Web Appliaction Works

There are four different types of people who interact with the Web Appliaction:

• Secondary school students who act as mentees
• Current students and graduates who act a mentors
• Moderators who check all correspondence within the Web Appliaction
• Administrator who has complete control over the Web Appliaction

The model that the online mentor Web Appliaction is based on is a one-to-many mentor-to-mentee relationship. Mentees are initially paired with a single mentor and become part of that mentor’s group along with other mentees within the system. At any time a mentee can add themselves to the group of any mentor they are interested in. When they become part of that group, they will receive updates about activity within that mentor group and be able to respond to the mentor’s blog posts and write on their discussion board. Mentors communicate with mentees via a personal blog. All activity in the system is monitored by designated moderators.
