Overview

The Victorian Space Science Education Centre (VSSEC) partnered with Aerion Technologies to create an interactive “Mission to Mars” software solution. Faced with the challenge of enhancing STEM engagement and teamwork in a simulated space mission scenario, VSSEC leveraged Aerion’s technical expertise to deliver an immersive, game-based learning application—now experienced by over 10,000 students.

About the Client

The Victorian Space Science Education Centre (VSSEC) is a leading education provider dedicated to inspiring students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through hands-on, real-world learning experiences. With simulation-based programs such as Mission to Mars, VSSEC targets secondary students (Years 8–10), offering unique opportunities for teamwork, innovation, and scientific inquiry seldom found in standard classrooms.

The Challenge

Prior to partnering with Aerion Technologies, VSSEC sought to elevate its Mission to Mars program by integrating technology in a way that would truly immerse students in the realities of space exploration. The existing setup struggled with:

Limited ability to simulate real-time astronaut health and mission conditions
Lack of engaging, technology-driven teamwork and problem-solving experiences
Difficulty scaling interactive elements to provide authentic feedback and competition

VSSEC needed a reliable, engaging, and fully integrated application to support collaborative learning and bring mission control to life.

Our Approach

Aerion Technologies took a holistic, customer-first approach to design and build the Mission to Mars Simulator:

Discovery & Consultation: Collaborated closely with VSSEC educators to understand learning objectives, user needs, and desired outcomes for the simulation.
Research & Data Analysis: Studied engaging learning modalities and user flows, mapping out how students interacted with space science concepts.
Strategic Planning: Devised a technology roadmap focused on immersion, teamwork, modularity, and long-term sustainability within VSSEC’s curriculum.
Technology Selection & Custom Development: Chose Microsoft .NET for robustness and scalability, and MySQL for managing dynamic simulation data.

The Solution

Aerion Technologies engineered a bespoke educational game that simulates NASA Mission Control. Core features included:

Immersive Multi-Role Team Play: Up to 12 students collaboratively operate as Mission Control Officers, each assuming a unique role critical to mission success.
Simulated Human Vital Signs Engine: A custom server program pulls real-time astronaut data from a MySQL database, pushing scenario-driven alerts to student consoles.
Interactive Challenges & Real-Time Feedback: Students are tasked with monitoring health systems and responding to alerts by solving subject-based mathematics and physics questions.
Points & Gamification: Performance is scored based on timely and accurate responses, fostering competition and rewarding teamwork.
User Experience Enhancements: Role-specific interfaces, live data visualization, and structured feedback loops made the simulation engaging and educational.

Supporting features:

  • Custom development in Microsoft .NET and MySQL

  • Real-time data processing and alerting systems

  • Integration with VSSEC’s curriculum and safety protocols

  • Technical reliability for daily program delivery
