Android is the operating system that Google purchased and used as the underlying software for their mobile and tablet devices. This underlying operating system controls the hardware and interfaces for Android Mobile, Tablet, and other IOT devices.
Google provides developers with an Android SDK, a software developer kit that allows users to interact with the device to create screens and sound animations using hardware such as the camera, GPS accelerometer, etc. Android would be the equivalent of windows or Linux, or Mac OS.
