When referencing computing, the term ‘cloud’ refers to the generalisation of interconnected computers and services running on the Internet, generally hosted by an external service such as AWS or Azure.
The cloud is just the external management of resources and servers on the Internet. Before the take-off of cloud computing, servers were hosted on-premises or in data centers. Since the rise of these services, a specific cloud computing category has been born, allowing individual resources to be used and consumed on a consumption model, pay-as-you-go, without an actual dedicated server. Cloud computing enables you a function that can run independently of an entire server or is abstracted from you; it runs on servers behind the scenes. You execute and process your data without maintaining all of the infrastructure.
